The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
