The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
