Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials state initial examinations show the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for details.
A senior representative commented the incident left him without words and had to be solved quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
